China Reaffirms Its Commitment to Latin America and the Caribbean

At a recent press conference, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of relations between China and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), stressing that these ties are not based on geopolitical calculations nor aimed at establishing spheres of influence.
During the third session of the National People’s Congress, Wang highlighted that cooperation between the two regions is grounded in principles of mutual support and solidarity, which he described as genuine South-South cooperation.
Wang Yi underscored that LAC countries aspire to build their own future, moving away from the notion of being considered “anyone’s backyard.” This statement comes amid a context where geopolitical tensions have led many countries in the region to seek greater independence and self-determination, distancing themselves from historical doctrines such as the Monroe Doctrine, which has been interpreted as a justification for U.S. intervention in Latin America.

In this regard, he reaffirmed China’s commitment as a pillar of the multilateral system and a defender of the Global South, recalling its history of fighting against colonialism and hegemonism.
Wang Yi concluded his remarks by highlighting the achievements made in collaboration with LAC leaders, thanks to the momentum provided by the China-CELAC Forum, which has advanced the construction of a shared community of destiny between China and Latin America.
His message aims to solidify China’s image as a strategic partner in regional development and revitalization, at a time when international dynamics are in constant flux.
